Our Story.
PH1 is a collaborative project that fuses together the ancient artistry of encaustic painting with contemporary photography. PH1 creates a fresh adaptation that embrace both a past and a present. Artists study the back and forth relationship between photography and wax by embracing the sculptural elements of encaustic, the removal and reapplication of paint, bold movement and colour. Our process based pieces invoke ideas of memory and nostalgia.
Formed in 2013, Artist Melissa Espina and Photographer Pietro Gallo combine very separate backgrounds. Espina has a BFA from OCAD University where she completed her undergraduate thesis in Florence, Italy. Gallo has an extensive history as a Film Editor, and over 100 film and television credits under his belt. PH1 has showcased their artwork in galleries and artist run centres in Europe and Canada.
